Free things to do in Boston in April

Winter seems gone, let us get out and do something after being cooped up inside for months. Here are some free things we can do in Boston this month.

The Frog Pond has been an ice skating rink for the last few months, but it will be open as a reflection pool by April 13. Check bostonfrogpond.com for free events and activities like puppet shows or drop-in Yoga classes as the season warms up. And what better way is there to see spring in bloom than taking a walk around Boston Common and the Public Garden?

We can also watch the Boston Marathon, on Monday, April 15, is Patriots Day/Marathon Monday. Head out to cheer on this year’s runners somewhere along the 26.2-mile route between Hopkinton and Copley Square.

There is also the author event. Visit Trident Booksellers on Newbury Street on Tuesday, April 16, for a free cooking demo and discussion with Yvette van Bowen, author of “Home Made Summer.” Check out other author events at Trident, or at The Harvard Bookstore – some are ticketed, but many are free.

Sure, you could walk the Freedom Trail by yourself, but park rangers will be giving free, 60-minute tours beginning in April. Tours will begin at the Boston National Historical Park Visitor Center in Faneuil Hall and are limited to 30 people. Visit www.nps.gov for more information and tour times.

Celebrate all things science at the Cambridge Science Festival, running from April 12-21. Take part in the annual science carnival, or check out the robot zoo. For a complete list of events and happenings, visit cambridgesciencefestival.org.

Visit Newbury Fine Arts for their spring exhibition, featuring the work of New England-based artists Liz Gribin (pictured) and Michele Dangelo. The exhibition runs April 1-26, with an opening reception April 4 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Visit newburyfinearts.com to preview the exhibition.
